Utopias and urban realities

City and Tree In partnership with :
Lafarge City of Le Havre
1st short film competition China Europa
« Utopias and urban realities »
Awards | Films | Photo Gallery

This short film competition was organized as part of the 3rd edition of China Europa Business Convention centred on the theme of sustainable urban development, a central issue for the coming years in Europe as well as in China.

In order to illustrate the theme in a less conventional way and to add a cultural touch to this major economic event, the first China Europa Short film competition was launched in September 2008.

Entitled « Utopias & Urban realities », it is directed towards European and Chinese arts, architecture and audiovisual schools.

For this edition, 6 films were in competition: on the web since the beginning of March and during a public screening and award ceremony on April 2nd, 2009.

"Young people are the future of our cities: they tell us about their ideas."

In 2030, ‘urban people’ will account for more than 80% of the population of the so-called ‘developed countries’. Is this the ultimate and magnificent triumph of the homo urbanis or a global catastrophe? Opinions on this matter are divided. The only sure thing is that numerous gigantic urban spaces will have to be built. Before we do this –but also while doing it- there will have to be a great deal of thinking in order to find ideas and new models, to experiment, test and perfect.

Who will do that? Mainly the youth of today. For who? For The youth of then.

But what do these young people who represent the future of cities think about that in such different environments as China and France?

How to they see the cities they live in? What are their expectations and dreams?

This is what we are going to see, with a lot of pleasure I am sure and I wish to salute the creativity and the freedom of speech of these short films produced by the 6 competing teams.
